"Six" is the tale of the wives of King Henry the 8th, who was a controversial king of England in the early 1500s. During his 4 decades of rule, he had six marriages. His demands to leave his first marriage led to the separation of the Church of England from papal authority. Many people probably know the story of Henry VIII. However, you may not know the story of his many wives. That’s where "Six" picks up.
The musical delves into the story of these six queens as they tell their individual experiences with the king. The queens try to decide who had the worst experience in living with the king. The queens discuss divorce, rejections, adultery, and even beheadings in a way that keeps you laughing while also touching your soul. They even place a relatable twist on the story by incorporating a dating app through a parody.
Eventually, they realize that arguing over who had the toughest time with Henry VIII is pointless. They come to realize that Henry VIII robbed them of their individuality. They achieve their “happily ever afters” that Henry VIII denied them by picturing what their lives would’ve been like without seeing Henry VIII.
