Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Sarofim Hall

In 2019, debuting at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge was transformed into the iconic live performance in Broadway. Originally created by Baz Luhrmann, it was given more life by Tony Awardees and cast members such as Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who embodied the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and the creatives including director Alex Timbers and music numbers and orchestrations by Justine Levine, behind the main stage.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is an adaptation full of happiness amidst tragic love that touches on all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 19th century and at the peak of Bohemianism, during the period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, searches for his big career break. He dreams to start a successful career as a writer and travels to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two local friends, Lautrec and Santiago, who influence him to create a play that they can put on. It is in the underworld of the Moulin Rouge nightclub where he meets Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge that captures his attention. Their developing love however encounters an almost insurmountable obstacle in the form of the rich and powerful Duke of Monroth, who is pledged Satine by the nightclub’s proprietor Harold Zidler, in exchange for a large financial expenditure to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and bring Moulin Rouge up to the next level. So begins Christian and Satine’s struggle for love on the live stage.

Essentially a love story that remains a sure favorite up to today, the show is also a melting pot of both ballads and pop music, putting together numbers not just from the Baz Luhrmann's original, but also song mash-ups and renditions from modern songs that were woven into the narrative of the musical.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be running for a limited season on July at Friday 17th July 2026, at Sarofim Hall.
