Moulin Rouge - The Musical

Sarofim Hall - Hobby Center

Set in the artistic period during the end of the 19th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily taken from French history. The musical is set in and is centered around the happenings of an actual nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, titled the Moulin Rouge, where the patrons come for unadulterated fun. By the late 1900s, the nightclub became well-known for its French Cabaret style – ecstatic, loose, and a somewhat crazy lifestyle. This Parisian nightclub that the staging was created from also affected the production's preparation, with Baz Luhrmann and the show's creators mentioning that they did take pieces of the actual French history, and it can assuredly be viewed in the production. The set, costume design, classical renditions, and actual performances (which showcases a lot of can-can dance) all obviously pay homage to to the original Moulin Rouge.

It is in this decade of history leading up to the 1900s and right in the middle of France's La Belle Époque, a period considered to be the peak of beauty and spreading artistry, where the romantic tale of two lovers take place. Christian, an American writer who moves to Paris seeking a successful passion, meets Satine, the leading performer of the Moulin Rouge. The couple, despite both external and internal challenges, fall madly in love and are forced into a concealed affair with each other caused by the Duke of Monroth's intervention.

Ironically, the period of La Belle Époque was criticized by even locals not as a time period of advancement or development. Historians believe that this time period were all about the elite's triumph over the poor. the Broadway play, however, chose to present the era in a more endearing viewpoint by highlighting the good Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as witnessed through Christian and Satine’s evolving love story throughout the show.

In more recent years, viewers and audiences have the opening to be part of the passion most likely also enjoyed by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be produced at an equally colorful and unforgettable venue, Sarofim Hall. With interior decor just as beautiful as the set design that it is hosting, Sarofim Hall is the best fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited production on Saturday 18th July 2026. Tickets are now available for purchase through the links that can be found at the top of this site.
