What happens when a small town suddenly receives 7,000 unexpected visitors? This happened to Gander, a small town in the northeast part of Newfoundland island in Canada. On the morning of the September 11 attacks, Canada offered to host inbound planes flying from Europe. Some planes were diverted to Gander International Airport, in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. When 38 planes unexpectedly landed at the airport, the 7,000 passengers initially were not allowed to deplane. Eventually, there were permitted to disembark the aircraft and take refuge in the town. Gander, which had 10,000 residents, suddenly doubled their population. As the “island people” opened up their homes to the “plane people,” some experience culture shock, while others’ tempers ran high. Come From Away is basically a touching story about everyone trying to make the best out of the situation.
